Ms. Kim Lapeyre, RN, BSN, MPH

Life takes us on a unique journey.  As a young nursing student, I never aspired to be a school nurse.   It’s rather surprising that I’ve been one for more than a decade.  However, I’ve always enjoyed children and caring for these Little Lakers is very fulfilling.  A sense of humor and a lovely coworker help.

Since I began school nursing at Dogwood Elementary, part of my responsibility has included CPR and First Aid instruction for older students, faculty, and staff.   More than simply trying to “train” individuals in the steps of emergency care and resuscitation, I hope to teach them to think about signs, symptoms, circumstances, and the environment that can signal the need for urgent intervention.  Performing effective CPR can make a difference.

One of my goals for young children is to help them reframe minor problems in a positive way so they learn to improve their coping skills.  For the more complex issues school nurses confront regularly, I rely on my education and professional experience to help parents and their children.  My undergraduate degree is from the MU Sinclair School of Nursing -Columbia.  I earned my Master’s degree is in Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center - Houston.    Through my ten years of working with adults and children with cancer in Houston, five years working in inner city emergency centers, and school nursing, I’ve grown to love the diagnostic process.   Developing trust  between  patients and staff is vital while symptoms are studied, tests are performed and a timely accurate diagnosis is reached.

I grew up on a farm.  If I could give one opportunity to children, I would love for them to experience daily farm life.   Lessons in basic biology abound, nature’s power and beauty are amazing, and frequently neighbors are there for each other.   Farming fosters respect for a consistent work ethic.  I believe these experiences provide a sound foundation for future challenges in adult life.

When not working, I enjoy playing piano, reading biographies, and traveling.  Visiting other parts of the U.S. and traveling abroad has enabled me to stay closely connected to my extended family and a multitude of friends.    My three nearly grown sons, on their own unique life trajectories, have kept me focused since the moment they entered my life.  Finally, Maxie, my handsome dog of mixed heritage, never fails to greet me enthusiastically at the end of a busy day.
